Why Our Chocolate Costs More (And Why It’s Worth Every Cent)
Every Block Tells a Bigger Story
We often get asked — why does a block of Federation Chocolate cost more than what’s on the supermarket shelf?
Because it’s made better. Because it does better. Because it tastes better.
Let us show you how flavour, ethics, craftsmanship, and Tasmania come together to make chocolate worth every cent.
🍫 Bean-to-Bar Flavour That Speaks for Itself
At Federation Chocolate, we craft chocolate from bean to bar in small batches, right here in Richmond, Tasmania. That means:
-
We personally source premium cacao from ethical farms
-
We roast, conche, and temper it ourselves
-
Every bar is poured, wrapped, and labelled by hand
No shortcuts. No additives. Just pure, expressive flavour — from the floral notes of our Ecuadorian cacao to the bold character of Papua New Guinea beans.
🌍 We Pay Farmers Fairly — Because That’s Where Flavour Starts
We source our cacao directly from farmers and co-operatives who are paid well above commodity rates. Most mass-market chocolate pays as little as $2.50/kg for cacao. We pay up to 10x that amount.
We do this because:
-
Farmers deserve a living income
-
Sustainable agroforestry preserves biodiversity
-
Quality cacao only comes from thriving communities
When you pay more, you’re helping create a fairer, more sustainable chocolate industry.
📈 The Global Cocoa Price Surge: Why It Matters
Due to extreme weather events in West Africa — especially Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire — global cacao prices have more than doubled in 2024–2025. Even major producers like Cadbury have raised prices.
But unlike the big players, we’ve never relied on cheap cacao. We've always paid premiums to ensure our supply chain reflects our values.
🦘 Proudly Tasmanian, Fiercely Local
We’re not just a chocolate company — we’re a small, family-run maker rooted in Tasmania’s Coal River Valley.
From our cellar door at Every Man and His Dog Vineyard to our new chocolate factory and Bar Craft experience, we’re building something real, local, and meaningful.
When you support us, you’re backing:
-
Tasmanian craftsmanship
-
Local employment
-
Regional food tourism
🖐️ Made by Hand, Not Machines
