Can I Take Food Home From Tasmania? What You Can (and Can’t) Bring Back

We get asked this a lot:
“Can I take food home from Tasmania?”
Some people even tell us they’ve heard you can’t take any food out of Tasmania at all.

That’s not quite true. You just need to know the rules — and they’re simpler than most expect.

Why the Confusion?

Tasmania is an island with strict biosecurity laws to protect our environment, farms, and food producers. You’ll see quarantine bins and signs at ports and airports because some things — like fresh fruit, vegetables, plants, and seeds — can carry pests that don’t exist here.

But that only applies to bringing food into Tasmania, not taking it out.

Taking Food Out of Tasmania

If you’ve fallen in love with Tasmanian produce (and who hasn’t?), you’ll be pleased to know you can take plenty of it home.

Allowed to take:

  • Packaged or sealed products like chocolate, jams, sauces, wine, cheese

  • Cooked or processed foods in sealed containers

  • Dehydrated or dried snacks

🚫 May be Not allowed:

  • Fresh fruit and vegetables

  • Unprocessed meat or seafood

  • Honey (to some parts of Australia)

If you’re heading to out of the state processed products like our handmade chocolate (and wine from Every Man and His Dog Vineyard) are absolutely fine.

Taking Food Into Tasmania

Different story coming the other way.
When you’re arriving, avoid bringing anything fresh, raw, or homemade that hasn’t been commercially packaged.
Biosecurity Tasmania has the full list, but the short version is:

If it’s sealed, cooked, or processed — it’s usually safe.

You can even bring chocolate on the Spirit of Tasmania or in your luggage — it’s perfectly fine to travel with.

The Sweetest Souvenir

Chocolate is one of the easiest Tasmanian foods to take home.
Our bars are handmade in Richmond from ethically sourced cacao and sealed to stay fresh — perfect for flights or the boot of your car.

If you’re visiting, stop in for a tasting, see the chocolate being made, and take a few blocks for the road.
They’ll make it home safely… if they last that long.
