The Tasmania Chocolate Pour – A Hands-On Chocolate Experience in Tasmania

Book for the Winter Warmer Chocolate pour here

If you’re searching for a chocolate experience in Tasmania, a memorable Tasmanian food experience, or something a little different to do while visiting Hobart and Richmond, we’d love to introduce you to The Tasmania Chocolate Pour.

Created here at Federation Chocolate in Richmond, Tasmania, The Tasmania Chocolate Pour is a hands-on chocolate experience that takes you beyond simply tasting chocolate.

You’ll discover how we make chocolate bean to bar, taste chocolate along the way, enjoy a decadent hot chocolate straight from our chocolate vats, and then get hands-on and pour your own chocolate Tasmania to take home.

And yes — it is every bit as much fun as it sounds.

From our Winter Warming Chocolate Experience to something we can enjoy all year

During Tasmania’s colder months we created our Winter Warming Chocolate Experience as part of The Off Season.

It quickly became one of our most popular experiences.

We loved running it, our visitors loved doing it, and it became obvious to us that there was absolutely no good reason to put away the chocolate moulds when winter finished.

So we haven’t.

We’ve taken everything people loved about the Winter Warming Chocolate Experience and created an experience that we can offer throughout the year.

Welcome to The Tasmania Chocolate Pour.

This isn't just a chocolate tasting

Federation Chocolate is one of Tasmania’s small bean-to-bar chocolate makers.

That means we don’t simply melt down commercially produced chocolate and turn it into something else. We source cacao and make our chocolate ourselves, here in our chocolate factory in Richmond.

During The Tasmania Chocolate Pour, we’ll take you into that world.

You’ll hear the story of cacao and discover how cacao beans become the chocolate we know and love. We’ll talk about where our cacao comes from, how we roast it, grind it and turn it into chocolate, and why the origin of cacao — and the people who grow it — matter so much to us.

This is a chocolate tour and experience designed to be relaxed, interesting and, most importantly, delicious.

You don't need to know anything about chocolate before you arrive.

You just need to enjoy eating it.

Make your own chocolate Tasmania

The centrepiece of the experience is the pour itself.

Rather than simply watching somebody else make chocolate, you get to make something of your own.

Using chocolate made here at Federation Chocolate, you’ll pour your own chocolate Tasmania.

It’s a wonderfully Tasmanian souvenir — although we should probably warn you that many of them don't survive the journey home.

While your chocolate sets, there’s plenty more chocolate to discover.

Hot chocolate — straight from the chocolate vats

There’s hot chocolate.

And then there’s hot chocolate at a chocolate factory.

As part of The Tasmania Chocolate Pour, you’ll enjoy one of our decadent hot chocolates made using the chocolate we produce right here.

Standing inside a working bean-to-bar chocolate business, drinking hot chocolate and smelling freshly made chocolate around you is a very different experience from ordering one in a café.

It connects the finished cup of chocolate with everything that came before it — the cacao bean, the grower, the roast, the grinding and the chocolate maker.

A Tasmanian food experience near Hobart

Federation Chocolate is located in Richmond in Tasmania’s Coal River Valley, around 25 minutes from Hobart.

Our chocolate factory shares its home with Every Man and His Dog Vineyard, making our little property a rather unusual place.

There’s a working vineyard.

A cellar door.

A chocolate factory.

Wine.

Food.

And quite a lot of chocolate.

For visitors looking for food experiences near Hobart, a Richmond food experience, or something to include as part of a day exploring southern Tasmania and the Coal River Valley, The Tasmania Chocolate Pour offers something genuinely different.

It’s not a large commercial chocolate factory tour.

We are a small Tasmanian family business, and the people talking to you about making the chocolate are the same people who actually make it.

Why bean-to-bar chocolate is different

Most people eat chocolate without ever really thinking about how it was made.

Chocolate begins with cacao, an agricultural product grown thousands of kilometres from Tasmania.

For us, making chocolate bean to bar means having a much closer relationship with that raw ingredient.

Different cacao origins can have remarkably different flavours. How cacao is grown, fermented and dried matters. How we roast it matters. How we grind it matters.

And the price paid to cacao growers matters too.

These are some of the stories we share during our chocolate experiences.

We want people to leave having had a great time — but perhaps also looking at a block of chocolate a little differently than they did when they arrived.

Looking for things to do in Richmond, Tasmania?

Richmond is already one of Tasmania’s favourite destinations, famous for its historic village, Richmond Bridge and beautiful Coal River Valley setting.

But increasingly, the region is also becoming somewhere to taste Tasmania.

Wine, cheese, produce and small artisan food businesses are all part of what makes this corner of Tasmania special.

The Tasmania Chocolate Pour adds chocolate to that list.

So whether you're planning a Tasmanian food tour, looking for things to do in Richmond, searching for a chocolate tour near Hobart, or simply want a hands-on experience that involves a rather generous amount of chocolate, come and spend some time with us.
